Legal Updates
“Today, Maryland Physicians Care (MPC) formally responded to the lawsuit brought by the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) last month by removing the case to Federal Court and a partial motion to dismiss.
As we’ve said all along, we stand by our mission, our practices, and our commitment to our members. This lawsuit is about payment, not care. MPC members obtaining care at UMMS receive all necessary care ordered by health care providers. UMMS receives payment for claims, consistent with state and federal laws and regulations. Put bluntly, UMMS is now seeking more money than is appropriate. And, instead of continuing to talk through any potential disagreements, it decided to file a baseless lawsuit,
MPC works to improve health outcomes by addressing the factors that impact our members’ well-being and providers’ effectiveness. As a HealthChoice MCO, MPC partners with the State of Maryland to build a more effective and sustainable Medicaid program that serves our community. MPC is mission-bound to ensure not only that our members receive necessary care in the most appropriate setting, but also to be responsible stewards of the state’s taxpayer dollars, a commitment we strive to uphold every day.
MPC offered to work with UMMS in partnership to address the root causes of Emergency Department (ED) overutilization. ED overutilization results in poorly coordinated care for the members, long ED wait time for all Marylanders, and costs taxpayers unnecessarily. UMMS declined to work with MPC on this initiative, but MPC stands ready to continue those discussions and welcomes the opportunity to partner with UMMS in this area.
MPC exists to serve our community by delivering high-quality, value-driven, and affordable care that improves health outcomes for our members. Every decision we make at MPC is grounded in a commitment to the dignity and well-being of the people we serve.”
