Maryland Children’s Health Program

Maryland Children’s Health Program, or MCHP, is a no-cost or low-cost health coverage for uninsured, eligible children in Maryland. This program covers routine check-ups, immunizations and dental care.

Those eligible for free coverage through MCHP are uninsured children under age 19, whose household modified adjusted gross income is at or below a percentage of the federal poverty level for their family size. To find the income level for your family size, see the MCHP income guidelines.

MCHP also provides no-cost or low-cost health coverage for uninsured, eligible pregnant women in Maryland. Eligibility depends on income level per household size, which can be found here.

What benefits do MCHP enrollees receive?

The Maryland Department of Health lists:

  • Doctor Visits
  • Hospital Care
  • Lab Work and Tests
  • Dental Care*
  • Vision Care
  • Immunizations
  • Prescription Medicines
  • Transportation to Medical Appointments
  • Mental Health Services
  • Substance Abuse Treatment

*Dental Care through the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program

MCHP Premium

Some children may not qualify for MCHP because their family’s income is above the maximum level for the program. If this is the case, they may be eligible for MCHP Premium.

To be considered for this program, the child’s parents or guardians must be enrolled in the Maryland Managed Health Care Program – HealthChoice. MCHP Premium requires a monthly premium payment, which is charged per family rather than per child. If you think your child qualifies for MCHP Premium, contact a HealthChoice representative to determine their eligibility, or ask your primary care physician at your child’s next visit.
