Know the Signs of Labor
Getting ready for labor and delivery can feel exciting and scary. Knowing what to expect can make you feel more confident and prepared for the big day.
What is labor?
Labor is also called childbirth. It is the process of the baby leaving the uterus or womb.
What are the early signs of labor?
As you get closer to your due date, your body will show signs that labor is coming. Here are some common signs that labor might be starting:
- Lightening: This is when the baby moves down into the pelvis. During this time, you may notice that your belly looks lower, and you can breathe more easily. You may also find that you must use the bathroom more since the baby puts pressure on your bladder.
- Braxton Hicks contractions: These can start weeks before labor. They are usually irregular and not as painful as real labor contractions. For many, it feels like a tightening or squeezing sensation in your belly.
- Increased discharge: As your body prepares for labor, you may notice an increase in vaginal discharge.
- Nesting instinct: Many pregnant people experience a burst of energy in the days or weeks before labor. They have the urge to clean, organize, and prepare for the baby’s arrival.
- Water breaking: This is one of the most telling signs that labor has or will start soon. Water breaking can happen in a gush or as a slow trickle. If you think your water has broken, contact your healthcare provider.
- Contractions: Labor contractions come at regular intervals and get closer together over time. They become stronger, longer, and more painful as labor progresses. If you’re in labor, you won’t be able to talk or walk during contractions. They may start in your lower back and move toward your belly.
What do I do if I think I’m in labor?
If you think you’re in labor, keep track of what you’re feeling and experiencing. Contact your healthcare provider and let them know. They can help you decide when it is time to go to the hospital or birthing center.
As you prepare for your baby’s arrival, remember that every labor experience is unique. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions. Understanding the signs of labor can help you feel more in control and ready for the journey ahead.
