Physical Activity and Exercise

Time to Get Active

Exercise and physical activity can benefit long-term health in many ways. Along with burning calories to maintain a healthy weight, exercise can help prevent illnesses by making your body stronger.

Exercise has also been shown to:

  • Lower your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other long-term health problems.
  • Make your lungs and muscles stronger.
  • Help you sleep better.

Try to add 30- to 60-minutes of exercise or physical activity to your routine at least one to two days a week. As you get used to a certain amount of exercise, consider doing more to continue strengthening your body.

Talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise program and learn about physical activity for all ages here.

Is Medicine an Option?

If you have tried to lose weight without success, ask your doctor about weight-loss medicine. The medicine will not result in weight loss on its own but can help your chances of weight loss when taken with diet and exercise. Like all medicine, weight-loss medications have side effects that can determine who should take them. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits to see if weight-loss medications are an option for you.
